Red Dead Redemption 2 Might Have 3 Protagonists

Supposed leak points to GTA 5 similarity

And so begin the inevitable leaks regarding Red Dead Redemption 2.

While we’re sure dozens of fake leaks will start pouring in soon enough, what we have here today has a chance of being legitimate. That said, fans should always keep in mind that any information coming from a source that isn’t Rockstar itself must be considered with skepticism.

This apparent leaks comes from a 4Chan user – identified by tripcode – who has previously provided legitimate leaks for various GTA Online DLCs based on internal Rockstar communications (most recently for Import/Export). With that kind of track record many fans are keen on believing what the leak contains, even though not everyone is happy about the implications.

Red Dead Online Timing

The leak says that Red Dead Online, the multiplayer mode akin to GTA Online that will accompany Red Dead Redemption 2, will be released some time after the main game, much like in the case of GTA 5. This means that for a short while, only the singleplayer portion of the game will be available. The reasoning behind this is to allow for proper server preparation, and that if Online would be available day 1, many buyers wouldn’t even touch story mode.

Protagonist(s)

However, tripcode’s main revelation about the game concerns Red Dead Redemption 2’s story.

Not only does he or she say that the game is indeed a prequel, as pretty much everyone assumes it will be, but it also suggests that there will be multiple playable characters. Three to be exact, much like in the case of GTA 5. The leaker says that in RDR 2 the three characters would all be members of the gang that John Marston was a member of prior to the events of the original Red Dead Redemption, however John himself will not be among them.

The promotional image for RDR 2 already indicated that the game will be a prequel, because the image features John Marston. Anyone who has played Red Dead Redemption will know that the game ends in a way that would prevent John Marston from appearing in a true sequel. Plus the whole theme of the game is about the “death” of the Wild West ideal, so setting any game after it chronologically would demand massive shifts in tone and theme.

So there you have it. Chances are Red Dead Redemption 2 will feature three protagonists, between whom the player will switch throughout the course of the story, which, in turn, will be a prequel.
