As the new year edges nearer and nearer, Rockstar is still quiet with regards to any new information about Red Dead Redemption 2. Yes, we are being strung along, however the first wave of promotional material has now been sent out to brick-and-mortar stores in several countries. Remember that according to the official announcement, the game will arrive sometime late 2017.
Images have surfaced of retailers having received Red Dead Redemption 2 posters and cardboard boxes with promotional artwork on them. Emblazoned on the cardboard boxes is “Autumn 2017”, as opposed to “2017” and “Fall 2017” as we’ve seen before (although Autumn is just what people in the United Kingdom call Fall). It’s also very interesting to see the PEGI 18 game rating logo (European too of course) on there at this early stage.
There is no concrete list of what retailers in which countries have been sent these promotional items, nor do we know exactly what other things might be among them – only images of the poster and boxes was posted so far. These particular photos come from a GAME store in the UK, but chances are the posters have popped up in the USA and some other countries too.
Rockstar is likely getting an early start on offline marketing in order to hike up pre-order revenue while expanding the reach the game has among mainstream circles. Potential customers who aren’t hardcore gamers aren’t as likely to come across promotional material online, since they rarely peruse gaming related websites.
GTA 5 had a pretty strong marketing campaign prior to release, such as entire trams being covered in promotional art, the sides of large buildings being emblazoned with posters, and it was probably the single most represented game on billboards ever. Chances are Rockstar wants to recreate the immense success of their previous release with Red Dead Redemption 2, but to achieve that they will need to hook the mainstream audience just like they did with GTA.
Have you seen Red Dead Redemption 2 posters and other promotional materials appear at local retailers?
